Toxic chemicals in your deodorant? Even more healthy options!

Back in April, I wrote an extensive post about the ingredients in deodorants and some of the alternatives out there.  Be sure to read Part 1 if you haven’t already.  I wanted to post an update about a few new products I have found and are now being used in our household.

July 2016 Update –

Results of the Crystal Body Deodorant Rock

Crystal DeodorantIn the first post, I reviewed the 5oz Crystal Body Deodorant Rock.  This is a crystal stone that is made out of natural mineral salts. The salts keep smelly bacteria at bay and you (in turn) don’t stink. Pretty simple and it is free of parabens, propylene glycol, chemicals, fragrance, aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium.

The single stone I purchased lasted me 6 months and would probably last longer but I had cracked it and it started to get some sharp spots. Sharp edges in the armpit hurt. But for $6, you can’t beat the price. Many natural food stores carry it and so do online stores like Amazon.  Think about the price…a buck a month–and if it lasts longer, it is even more economical.

I still recommend this stone for body odors of all ages and genders because it works very well and gives you a huge bang for the buck.  It doesn’t have the chemicals that potential suspects in breast cancer and lymphoma.  It makes a great deodorant for kids entering puberty and for those who are sensitive to ingredients in the name-brand products.

My New Fave – Le Crystal Naturel Deodorant Crystal Rock

Le Crystal Naturel Deodorant CrystalI really liked how well the first crystal worked, so I did some searching around and found a much larger stone from the same company (Crystal) and is called Le Crystal Naturel Deodorant Crystal Rock. This stone is actually a big chunk of mined salt that is hand shaped. Due to the nature, the sizes and weight vary, but all stones are at least 6oz in size. The one I purchased is much larger than the first crystal deodorant I used and fits in my hand nicely. The larger diameter also fits the shape of my underarms and made application easier.

The Le Crystal Naturel is comprised entirely of the naturally occurring Potassium Alum. Potassium alum molecules have a negative ionic charge (much like Ammonium Alum in the original crystal), making it unable to pass through the cell wall. This makes the Le Crystal Naturel deodorant another safe alternative to the normal deodorants that are filled with parabens, propylene glycol, chemicals, fragrance, aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium.  Le Crystal Naturel deodorant doesn’t have any of these harmful ingredients.

I have been using the new crystal for about 2 weeks now since August of 2013 and I really like it so far. I had a 2-3 day adjustment period where my body (I guess) had to get used to a different deodorant. I had minimal body odor during that time, but it has completely went away. I recommend switching to this on a weekend if you have any hesitation at all. The application is the same as other crystal/stone/rock deodorant. Start with CLEAN arpits–it doesn’t work on already-funky pits. Then, wet the stone down, apply to underarms, wet it down, apply again, wet it down, apply again… Basically, hit each armpit (with the wet crystal) 3 times and you will be just fine.

I am not sure if any local stores are carrying this specific product, however, you can order it on Amazon for around $12. The reviews are quite interesting, but all very positive. One reviewer listed it as 1-star–not because it doesn’t work, but only because it doesn’t hold up to being dropped on a hard floor. It was quite funny to read. Many people are very happy with this crystal and the first one I reviewed–so don’t just take my word for it.

*Update (4/30/14) – I am still using the same stone I started with in August of 2013 and despite dropping it on the floor and breaking it into two pieces, it is still working well for me.  I will easily get a year of use out of this $12 stone–with none of the deodorant chemicals I used to subject my body to.

All-age Friendly – Naturally Fresh Roll On Crystal Deodorant

Naturally Fresh Roll On Crystal DeodorantRecently, my girlfriend and young daughter started using the Naturally Fresh Roll On Crystal Deodorant.  Naturally Fresh is a crystal salt based deodorant similar to the Le Crystal Naturel, but with a few extra ingredients.  According to their website, the ingredients are as follows:

  • Purified Water
  • Potassium Alum – Same as Le Crystal Naturel
  • Zinc Ricinoleate – Extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant. Zinc ricinoleate does not inhibit normal perspiration, and will not interfere with the natural flora of the skin. Instead, it ‘fixes’ the odors produced by bacterial decomposition in sweat so that they cannot be released into the atmosphere and cause the characteristic sweaty smell
  • Xanthan Gum – A bacteria-derived stabilizer, commonly used in gluten-free foods
  • Chamomile Extract (Anthemis Nobilis Flower)
  • Phenoxyethanol – Alternative preservative instead of Parabens – not perfect, but required to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria inside the roll on container

Both of the ladies seem to like it so far and their bodies quickly adjusted to this natural deodorant.  Naturally Fresh states on their website, “For some people, different crystal formats (solid crystals, roll-ons, or sprays) may work immediately and for others they may take several days for your body to adjust to using an all natural product.”  In other words, if it doesn’t work right away, don’t give up.  The name brand deodorants use harsh chemicals and eliminate that “transition time”.

For the person who wants something quick and easy to apply like a normal deodorant, this is a great option.  The larger crystal stones are (in my opinion) equally as easy to apply, but the real benefit of the roll on is that you can take it with you to the gym or work to touch-up your odor-makers as needed throughout the day.

Another great feature of this product is that many local stores are carrying it, including Walmart, GNC, Kroger/Fred Meyer, Publix, Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods Market, Smith Drug, Raley’s, Ralph’s, Henry’s, Marc Glassman, XPECT, King Soopers, Dillons, Smiths, Big Y, Fry’s, City Market, and

Are you using any natural/alternative deodorants?  If so, which one(s) and what do you like/dislike about them?  Please leave me your thoughts below.
